Description

So I'm afraid this is only an up-sprucing of the top image in my original bid for Brynja, but it was always meant to be a standalone piece and to be...well, finished. xD Also apologies for it being a little out of order! My other snowhorse, Fannar, should technically "exist" at Horsepoint before Brynja, but time and I have been casual with each other for many years, particularly when it's not real time. ;3 He's currently sitting happily in my sketchbook, eating rubber droppings or something. Annnnd also apologies for how long this has taken o.o My refs-to-do pile is ginormous. xD

But yes, I rather like how this turned out. c: Even though I am a fool and went for the stage in a snowhorse's coat cycle that takes the most detailing. xDDD And I know she er...doesn't look very pony-sized. I'd never really drawn a man on a small horse before, and though it's distinctly better than the original sketch, it's still not quite there. ^^' I shall work on that! :shakefist: Gonna stop apologising now. I like it, in general! :dummy: And I like Marko's nose :3

No gigantic story this time ^^' Fannar has a small one, but Brynja's sort of a logical conclusion for now. :3

So, as I said before, Brynja is wearing winter warfare tack! This is white, lightly padded and covered in fabric to stop it chilling, and all metal is either plastic-coated or replaced with plastic for the same reason; the snaffle bit has a rubber mouthpiece. The saddle design is inspired by Icelandic Horse saddles and Mongolian working saddles, with their long flaps. Marko usually wears a white greatcoat (without the black cap) for winter operations, but since visibility is actually the point here, he's got his usual black one on. Also snow goggles. ♥

Info: Brynja is very fond of humans, and loves to be around them. She can get somewhat lonely when left for long periods because of this, but always forgives. She has very set ideas about people endangering themselves, and tries to mother them; she can get very stubborn in this area. She has great stamina and is very hardy, but is not fond of jumping out of anything but necessity. She is extremely surefooted.

Intro: The regiment goes to war in countless different climates. They've fought in the desert, in the snow, in the jungle, on mountains and in valleys, in swamps and on steppes; everywhere. There are a lot of climates that humans are not best equipped to deal with, and snow is one of them. When Lieutenant Marko was transferred came to Horsepoint with Major Daels, Captain Garmanson and the others, he set up a winter warfare training camp in the Carpathians, rotating the horses so that they'd each have some snow training.
When Daels comes back from an auction one day with a little grey stallion with a curly, shaggy coat and an absurdly cheerful expression, he's a little dubious. But after conquering his preconceptions and the feeling that as a grown man on top of a pony-sized horse he might look a little odd, he comes to appreciate the breed, particularly when he takes the stallion, Fannar, up to the mountains in the winter and he quickly develops his very own snow rug. Marko trains him in snow and cold weather warfare and has a lot of success with the eager little thing. But after a near miss on a slope with a weak snow layer, Marko realises the need for a winter team dedicated not just to combat. When they find a dark chestnut snowhorse mare for sale, he puts his name down for her in the hope of starting a mountain search-and-rescue team.

Marko takes the young mare up to the Carpathians, and starts teaching her and bonding with her. He finds her to be very interested in humans, to the point of following the soldiers around just for curiosity's sake, and very nurturing. He encourages her naturally excellent sense of smell so that she is able to actively match a person to an item of their clothing, and begins the tracking training by starting with a very familiar and dear person having walked only a few metres away and hidden behind a snowdrift. He gradually builds it up over the months and years, and eventually she becomes an accomplished rescue horse who can locate and help to unearth a person buried under a lot of snow, even following a somewhat old trail. Once they are uncovered, her superb winter coat combined with her inclination to snuggle the afflicted into her warm embrace - whether they like it or not - helps to reduce the risk of hypothermia. Though she is small, even on the scale of Snowhorses, she becomes very strong and can carry a man with ease; she can also either carry an extra person or pull a stretcher sledge.
